Da trent'anni il noto psicoanalista friburghese Fritz Erik Hoevels studia con gli strumenti di Freud, oltre i campi principali della sua disciplina, anche fenomeni sociali.
Ad essi appartiene la religione, il fenomeno forse più perseverante e allo stesso tempo più incomprensibile di tutti. Perché le sue affermazioni possono essere credute, benché si possano facilmente interpretare come obiettivamente prive di fondamento e infantili?
Come, del resto, poterono formarsi essa ed i suoi riti? Qual è il rapporto fra la sua sostanza psicologica e la sua forma storica? In un'epoca in cui sono tornati la sharia – di nuovo mani mozzate e donne velate – l'intolleranza contro sette e la vertiginosa crescita dei privilegi e della proprietà ecclesiatici nonostante un diminuire del numero dei membri, tali questioni sono più attuali che mai. Freud ci ha fornito la chiave del nocciolo della religione, e Hoevels apre con essa un scompartoo dopo l'altro della religione, tanto scomparti centrali, quanto apparantemente marginali.

Dipl.-Psych. Dr. Fritz Erik Hoevels is a psychoanalyst in Freiburg.
Major works: Marxismus, Psychoanalyse, Politik (Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Politics), Wilhelm Reichs Beitrag zur Psychoanalyse (Wilhelm Reich’s Contribution to Psychoanalysis) and Wie unrecht hatte Marx wirklich? Band 1:Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft (How Wrong was Marx Really? Volume I: Society and Economics).
His study on the unconscious motives of the poet Arrabal was published by Hoffmann &Campe under the editorship of J. Cremerius. Numerous essays in the scientific journals Praxis der Psychotherapie, System ubw and Hermes. His Collected Papers on the Psychoanalysis of Religion (first published by freethought international/Indian Atheist Publishers) have been translated into five major languages, including English, Chinese, and Russian.
In 1974, Fritz Erik Hoevels founded the MRI (Marxist-Reichist Initiative), later renamed in the Bund gegen Anpassung (Alliance against Conformity).
